Story writing

Year 4 used their literacy skills to write science fiction stories over Easter. (They are great to read. If you want to have a sneaky peak, you can click here to read short extracts from three of the stories).

I was wondering if anyone could share any top tips about writing an effective story. My tip would be to write an opening to get the reader interested… beginning with action is one way to do this.

  1. Jonathan says:

    Start with speech, for example…

“Jim help I`m stuck,” John shouted.

If you ever wondered about on the internet looking for good technique on writing sentence, in year 4 we are looking at
different ways of writing a sentence so I would like to show you one! A 3-part action sentence.
    example
Jim ran to the cellar, opened the big, dusty hatch and jumped in.

There are many other tips that we know and you can learn them so try them out and if you have any try and share some.

  3. Marc says:

It is mainly called three part action because there are three actions (verbs). It has a first action then coma to separate them
then the next action so on and so forth.
I think a three-part action is good because it is better than the example below:
I went to the park. I bought ten items. I got to the till. I reached for my wallet. I forgot it.
That is not a very good story. The three-part action is good but don’t put more than 3 in a story.

Maybe start with a question e.g. Have you seen a ALIEN?! I have.

  5. Zayd says:

    You need punctuation.

    • Mr Tarte says:

      A great tip, Zayd!
Trying to include a range of punctuation correctly can really improve our writing.
Do you have any advice on how to use brackets in a story?

  6. Brandon says:

Put speech marks E.G. “Jake are you ok?”

    • Mr Tarte says:

A really good way to bring a story to life is some dialogue between characters, Brandon -well done.
Does anyone know the rules for using speech?

  7. Jenson says:

    66 99 new speaker,new line

  8. Darcy says:

  9. Molly says:

Wow year4 you are amazing at story writing! In your openings, (which are brilliant) you need to grab the reader, maybe make it alarming! It will make the reader read on. You could start with action, or you could start with something that is happening to you right at that moment, then explain in the story how you got to that situation. You could start with speech, describing a setting, there are so many possibilities out there! Great work!
